Program by Roger Norton
Text by Fender Tucker
In its 225+ years of existence
America has produced its share of
heroes and goats, most of whom have
never appeared on television. So how
are today's children supposed to learn
about these famous personages and
their accomplishments? Why, with
programs like Roger Norton's FAMOUS
AMERICANS, the latest in his LOADSTAR
Educational Quiz Series.
It's not just for kids, either --
adults who have no intention of EVER
opening up a textbook again can have a
lot of fun with this one, too.
Basically, FAMOUS AMERICANS is a
multiple-choice quiz. A person from
America's past tells you about himself
and you are to pick his name from a
list of eight.
There are over 130 Americans in
this quiz so you can play several
times before you become a Historian
(the highest ranking). At the
beginning of the quiz, you are asked
if you want to have the correct answer
revealed in case of a wrong guess.
It's up to you -- some teachers
advocate prompt reinforcement for
their beloved students, others think
the little cretins should fend for
themselves.
By the way, Roger, who is an
excellent high school teacher, is the
former type of teacher. I'm the one
who added the "Reveal correct answer
(y/n)" feature.
You get ten points for answering
correctly. This increases the point
value for the next correct answer by
ten. A wrong answer decreases the
point value for the next question by
ten.
Each question may be about the
randomly selected "MYSTERY AMERICAN",
whose correct answer is worth a bonus
500 points.
I have been using masculine
pronouns in this text but I should
point out that there have been many
famous American women and they are in
this quiz. It's interesting to note
that while there are numerous male
villains in American history, all of
the women in this program are nice...
except for Carrie Nation, whom I've
never cared for. I'd like to have
seen her try to tote her axe into a
bar where I was having a good time.
Try this fun program out. You'll
get a kick out of it...and probably
learn something.
